2008 Florida Spring Training Tour, Day 7 (Tampa Bay Rays)

BY: T.C.

On Thursday, I woke up early again and headed to the Rays’ spring training facility.  This would be the last time the Rays use these practice fields because they are moving about an hour and a half south for spring training next year.  Because of that, I won’t bother to publish a map for this camp.

The gates to the practice field opened at 9 am.  The Rays had a short workout and a couple of the key guys that I really wanted weren’t there due to injuries (Scott Kazmir and David Price).  The team finished up its workout around 10:15am, and a few guys stopped to sign on their way out.  After practice, however, is where the good stuff came.
About 5 or 6 of us waited outside the Rays’ parking lot and really cleaned up as the guys left the fields.  The only guys I wanted that didn’t stop were Longoria & Upton.  Here is what I ended up with:

  • Troy Percival, 2 ROMLB
  • Carlos Pena, 1 card, 2 ROMLB with 2007 Comeback Player of the Year inscription (He did two for me because he screwed the first one up by accidentally writing 2008 Comeback Player of the Year. He tried to fix that one and then did a second one for me.)
  • Carl Crawford, 2 ROMLB
  • Andy Sonnastine, 1 RMLB, 5 cards
  • Jeff Niemann, 1 RMLB, 3 cards
  • Akinori Iwamura, 1 ROMLB
  • Wade Davis, 1 RMLB
  • J.P. Howell, 1 Card
  • Andy Cannizaro, 3 cards
  • Jacob McGee, 3 cards
  • Josh Paul, 3 cards (this guy’s mustache kills me…he looks like a 70’s porn star)
  • Al Reyes, 2 cards
  • Shawn Riggans, 6 cards
  • James Shields, 3 cards
  • Eric Hinske, 2 cards

T.C. It looks like you had a pretty nice spring training! This is a cool site you have for baseball fans & I will check in from time to time…. It certainly was nice meeting you & grabbing those graphs with you, hopefully we can do it again next year…. Between Torre & myself we grabbed over 150 auto’s in 4 days, so it was nice!! If you are ever are in Atlanta & want to get some auto’s at the Braves game let me know, we’ll hook up and I’ll show you the ropes at Turner Field….It’s one of the easier ballparks to get’em ( especically on the visitors side of the park)…Take care & I’ll tell my geek friends about this site! Keep in touch…
    Chris
