2008 Florida Spring Training Tour, Day 7…continued (Pittsburgh Pirates @ Philadelphia Phillies)

By: T.C.

I met a few really cool ‘graphers at the Rays’ camp.  As we finished up the Rays’ practice (around noon), they convinced me to head over the Pirates vs. Phillies game in Clearwater to try to get some guys as they left the game.  We went and grabbed lunch and met up at the Phillies’ players parking lot.  Doing the players lot at Bright House Networks Field pretty much sucks.  All of the good guys park down low by the clubhouse.  Also, you have to make a decision about which side of the lot you want to try to get players on.  About half come out one way and about half come out the other way.  You really can’t run back and forth between the sides because it is about a 250 yard run.  By the time you get to the other side, the player will be long gone.  I got a few Phillies, but it seemed like no matter which side I picked, the players would come out the other side.

After getting frustrated with the Phillies, I decided to go over to the visitor side to snag some of the Pirates as they got on the bus.  (The bus lines up and waits outside the Pirates clubhouse, which is outside the 1st base line.)  I didn’t bring any Pirates cards, because I didn’t plan on ‘graphing any of their practices or games.  I had a bunch of baseballs, though, so I figured I’d try for the few guys they have worth getting.  It turned out to be a good decision, as I was able to get several players as they got on the bus.  I’d actually recommend doing the visitor bus at Bright House.  If you get a good spot on the rail, you will probably do well.  Here are the ‘graphs I got after the game:

  • Charlie Manuel, 2 cards
  • Carlos  Carrasco, 1 ROMLB, 1 card
  • Brandon Watson, 2 cards
  • Vic Darensbourg, 1 card

  • Adam Laroche, 1 ROMLB
  • Andrew McCutchen, 1 ROMLB
  • Neil Walker, 1 ROMLB
  • Nate McClouth, 1 RMLB
  • Doug Mientkiewicz, 1 ROMLB
  • Matt Capps, 1 RMLB
